They're forging their own paths and carrying on a legacy, thanks to the award that provides financial support to students studying Latinx diasporas or Latin America.

This year’s awards recipients are Cecilia Vanderveen， 25岁， a Justice, Community, and 领导 major with a minor in East Asian Studies, and 拉雷娜·托雷斯25岁, a Chemistry and History double major.
“Both Torres and Vanderveen exemplify the core values of ILaLS through their dedication to serving others and their unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world,” says María路易莎·鲁伊兹， Director of ILaLS and a professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies. 她说，在表彰他们的过程中，“我们不仅庆祝他们的个人成就，也重申了我们维护学院社会正义和社区参与核心原则的集体责任。”

Cecilia Vanderveen is spending her Spring 2024 semester in Tokyo through Saint Mary’s 留学项目. This isn't her first time far from home; 在她成长的过程中，她的家庭经常搬家，到她高中毕业的时候，她住过加利福尼亚、华盛顿、新罕布什尔和比利时。 “因为我经常搬家，我变得更有必要提高我的文化敏感性，并激发我对新朋友和新地方的渴望，”范德文说。

After she graduates from SMC, she plans to pursue a combined 硕士学位，教师资格证书 at Saint Mary's and use those skills to teach elementary school students overseas.

LaReina Torres is a first-generation college student from California’s Central Valley and a member of the 高潜力项目. In Spring 2023, she was part of the Spring 2023 Public History course that conducted interviews with 来自惠普50年的校友.
